This week, you were tasked with being spokespersons for the fictional make up brand, Ultima cosmetics. Only three spots are up for grabs for the next photoshoot, so let's see how you went.
Emma: Wow, fucking Jourdan and Alicia's are perfect. Jourdan, that hair! OMFG that hair!! It's beautiful and amazing and just perfect for the product. And Jourdan looks AMAZING!!! Alicia, wow, just wow. I love this, and a fucking profile at that? Perfect hair, perfect profile, perfect photo. You just nailed this theme head on. Kida's is my least favourite but it's still good tho. Beautiful, although I wish I could see more of the hair for a hair product, but it's a good picture. Great job!!!
Janice: The less editing I have to do, the better. In your case, a lot of cropping had to be done. The task of hair is not the easiest theme to get, but I think you nailed it.
Just nitpicking with Jourdan. Her hair is perfect, but the eyes read as dead to me, rather than intensity.
You had absolutely no idea what I had to go through to work with that "Karma" text, and what I had to do to single it out. It worked in the end, but it wasn't the most ideal thing to work with, and in any other shoot, you'd be losing a few marks for that.
As for Kida, I know you originally edited out her face markings, but this is Kida, and a part of her. It what makes her stand out, and recognisable from the other black woman with white hair and blue eyes (Aka Storm). The art style does make her face look flat here, the markings bring focus away from that.
Hel: Jourdan, I love how well you're selling the product. You've definitely chosen the right product to compliment this shot. I do agree with Janice that your eyes are a bit bothersome, though.
Alicia, like Emma, I love the profile work here. Before reading the descriptions of the products, I tried to guess what each shot was selling and I came very close on this shot, so definitely hit the theme very well.
Kida, your hair is beautiful and I can see you effectively selling your product. I am judging these based off of what you submitted rather than Janice's edits, so I have to comment on the lack of your facial markings. I wouldn't ask Winnie from Lionheart to edit her skin because that's who she is and embracing it makes it a strength in her uniqueness, which is the same for Kida.
Overall, I want to say that I appreciate that you gave of three shots from three different angles. We have the straight-forward shot, the 3/4, and the profile. Nice that you gave us variety this round while still keeping the products in mind.
Emma: I love Sean's. He looks irresistible and clean. Works wonderfully. Miguel, not my favourite looking guy of the bunch, but that's not your fault. He doesn't have to be attractive, just needs to model and he's doing a good job here. I do like this. Squall, this is fantastic, my favourite of the bunch, and glad for the nipples lol great job on this one.
Janice: Truthfully, I left your ads to finish last. I didn't know what angle I was going to take with them. Women's cosmetic ads and men's grooming ads look different.
The main issue I'm having with Sean and Miguel's is that you wanted them to be ads for body wash and shampoo, etc. However, there's one crucial thing missing in those that other ads have: Soap. Foam. I worked with what I had to make a great finished product on both, but I don't know about them being ads for bathing products.
As for Squall, I took the liberty of adding nipples. The original picture just had icky brown dots that reminded me too much of cancerous melanoma. As for it being a scent, I feel it's reminiscent of Sean's sex sell's ad, which obviously got you first callout. It is missing the tiny bit of oomph Sean's one had though.
Hel: Sean and Miguel, Janice is right hat it's a bit hard to see your products being sold because of the lack of soap or foam. However, I find myself believing Sean's more cause you sold it to us a lot better. Also, Sean's skin looks really healthy and clean, which is what you'd want after using the product. I do really like Miguel's shot, too, but the theme incorporation's a bit weak there, for me.
I'm judging Squall's shot based off the unedited version. The melanoma nipples don't actually bother me cause I'm used to seeing that in a lot of animated shots and probably wouldn't have commented on it had it not been made an issue by a certain someone. I think Janice has run out of things to fix on herself and is now moving onto performing plastic surgery on contestants. In any event, it's hard to connect the theme here, but it's also due in large part to your lack of confidence in yourself. Selling yourself in these games can be huge. From my experience, most judges feel bad when they give someone a lower score or vote to eliminate them. Having a team show doubt in themselves makes it a bit easier for a judge to justify a lower ranking and you definitely don't want to make that easier for anyone to do. That said, in the end, it looks like you are going for the cologne, which I feel works. As Janice pointed out, there is history for this style of shot being tied to that product, so you know it should work. Just believe in yourself. You didn't get 2 FCOs by accident.
Emma: Tao's is good. I like the bright colours and definitely a great focus on her eyes. Bing's is gorgeous, but I don't like the turban blends in with the background, at first sight I was like omg where is her head. Her lips are also way too dark that I thought it was a lipstick ad at first. But her photo is amazing. Zelda's is nice. I like that you are covering most her face except for her eyes, brings the focus right where it belongs. Good job.
Janice: What happened to the Kamikaze method? There was so many edits done to these!
Tao's is indeed gorgeous. Shows off her features nicely, and the product, without taking away from the modelling.
It's funny Emma points out that the lips are too dark, when the original picture of this, the lips were a bright, vibrant red. My sentiments echo Emma about that turban.
And now, excuse me while I admire my edits of Sheik's eyes over yours. I think Zelda's ad came out the best out of any ad in the bunch.
Hel: Great series of products to be given playing asian models. Having played Koda Kumi and Bingbing Fan in games, I know you're pretty much screwed with asian models getting anything other than eyes for this week since you'll always get the comment "I feel like your eyes are taking focus away from the product."
However, it seems that can be a double-edged sword, cause while I do see the product incorporation for Tao, it's not as strongly represented as I expected. Still, it's easy to tell that it's what you're selling, especially since you have pretty much a nude makeup theme for the rest of the shot. I also like that you're giving us a 3/4 shot here since the other two shots have the same angle, so this one keeps your shots from getting stale this round.
Li, your shot is my favorite of the three. The product shines here and so do you. It looks like you edited Li's lips to be darker and I'm actually going to have to say that I like it that way. Had they been brighter, it could have been competing for attention more.
Zelda, as with all of the teams, I'm judging/scoring based off of the shots before Janice's edit. I don't really like how your eyes look here and since you're selling an eye product, it becomes a bigger problem. Also, with how dark the shot is overall, I think it takes away from your product. I do think you had one of the hardest tasks this round in finding a good shot for Zelda since I don't think she's a character that really has a focus on makeup in her design and especially not eye makeup. As a stand-alone shot ignoring the theme, I do overall like it cause I tend to gravitate more towards darker themes and you give us nice points of interest. I'm just not sold on it for this round. Although, Emma did bring up good point, that a really nice positive is that covering half your face immediately pulls our attention to your eyes.
Emma: Bing and Rose are both beautifully done. I really like both of them, and their smooth beautiful skin. Lara's not so much. Her skin is too brown, but it works with the product you chose though, so that's good.
Janice: Bingbing's is straight forward, it's basically perfect.
Rose's one, you took more of a risk. Advocacy advertisement. 1 in 8 women and 1 in 1000 men are at risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. The focus on the ad here is for breast cancer advocacy more than the product. I works as an advocacy advertisement, but I really would've preferred going straight down the path of giving all the fake money to me.
Angelina Jolie... I mean Lara Croft, glorious bone structure, looks great. I think it's not the skin being too brown though, it's the brown glow around her that's the issue.
Hel: Fan, when I saw your shot, I said to myself that it could easily be used in an actual campaign and the I read your description and saw that it's from an actual campaign. So, you nailed it here.
Rose, I appreciate that you took a bit more of a risky route here, so that wins brownie points with me. Your skin looks beautiful and I don't think the scarf detracts from that. Had there been anything else in the shot, maybe I would have commented on it taking away from the overall effect, but that's not the case.
Lara, this is actually the only one of the three that I don't love. The product is causing your skin to look fake and unnatural to me. As Janice pointed out, it could just be the brown glow around you that makes it feel like you're more dirty than bronzed. Makes me think of Pigpen from Peanuts.
Emma: All three of these are gorgeous. Cara's is the best. Selena's the worst. I think because her lips look a tad cracked under the gloss. The main problem for me and all these photos is that ever single model, their hair is so prominent and over powering. Cara's is the only one that shows a main focus on the lips but that's because of the lipstick in her hand. Otherwise, I might think these were all about the hair. Overall though, good job.
Janice: Yes, Cara's is the best picture of the bunch, its are front and centre, and it's all thanks to that lipstick.
I do like how Selena's came out the most. But I agree, her lips do look cracked under the gloss (Ah, the drawbacks of having large lips ).
Snow White, I feel the image looks a bit too general for me. The hair, the eyes, the skin, the lips... They're all fighting for the spotlight. It would really be much better if just the lips (and skin, I guess, in her case it would be inevitable) were stealing the spotlight.
Hel: Let's get the negatives out of the way first. Selena, I'm not a fan of your shot this round. You lips look unhealthy and you could have really used some cropping in this shot. Janice's cropping job alone makes the shot a lot better, but as I told all of the other teams, I am judging/scoring this round based off of what the teams themselves submit. It just needed to be a tighter shot and healthier lips.
That said, I love the other two shots. Cara, it's a phenomenal, professional-quality shot and I wouldn't be one bit surprised to find out that it's from an actual lipstick campaign.
Snow White, you may have a lot of things competing for our attention here and maybe it's because I just came from looking at two other lip products, but my eyes went to your lips. It's a very beautiful art style and a beautiful shot.
Snow White and Cara, you two just need to hold an intervention for Selena. This is the first time I've seen her like this in this game.
