Welcome teams! Your task this week was to represent one of the Wu Xing, or the Chinese elements. Unfortunately, we had no one represent fire! You could go literal or symbolical, and if you went symbolical, part of your task this week was a description to convince us that this But let's see what we got!
Janice: I think there's a deeper meaning to this photo when you associate it with the Chinese elements than what you've given it credit for. To me, this photo symbolises the relationship between the elements of water and metal - That is metal carries water. In this you have the metal tap carrying the water to the bath tub, and also the metal choker embracing Yasmin, who is representing the fluid nature of water herself. Basically, I am liking everything about this - from the neck down. That face and hair is horrible. You look like a zombie Dora the Explorer.
Morgan: This is swimming! (great). You have done a good job capturing your element so well and your presence is strong in this also, you havent got lost in the photo which is important. Your neck looks lovely and stretched, however as Janice mentioned your face is a bit off, your expression looks a little disgusted/angry and your features seem to be overemphasised. But overall I'm still loving this!
Rarity: I love and adore how futuristic this is and it looks as though your outfit is dying the water a more deeper blue than usual. I'm not crazy about the short bangs but like I said, this is futuristic and if that is where bangs are headed, well, we most certainly must put a stop to it this instant!
Janice: I think what is here is a convergence of the Wood and Earth elements. In this, we have the serene calmness of Earth, plus the obvious literal representation of wood. Since you've gone with wood, I'll talk about that. Mulan stands talls and proud like a tree, and is blossoming with her umbrella as the plants blossom around her. As a literal representation of Wood, I think this is pretty strong.
Morgan: I like this but honestly I dont see the element wood here, I would see it being more as a earth element. Only through Janices comment can I see the fact that you yourself could be interpreted as representing the wood element though your stature of a tree. I dont know, the element connection is lacking for me a bit. However your modelling is strong and this is a strong beautiful photo, your neck is long and delicious, your eyes are big and bright and you as a model stand out without having to try.
Rarity: Although there is wood in your umbrella and a few branches are showing, I also see this as more of an Earth shot, and that is an element all it's own. I do appreciate that you went for a more natural look. It doesn't seem to me as though you have any makeup on at all and your skin is just simply amazing. Your kimono even has an earth feel to it. Overall because Wood and earth can be so similar I will say, a job well done.
Janice: Wow. Just wow. This photograph is absolutely amazing on so many levels. From the outfit to the setting, it describes metal. There are absolutely no negatives I can think about in this photo, I am absolutely blown away! I love the outfit, I love the styling, I love the pose, and I like that it's in a cold, sterile studio. I adore this photo.
Morgan: Absolutely amazing! You never fail to impress do you Team Fairyland. This is a perfect representation of metal, and you need no setting to represent it you ARE representing metal. And yet its fashionable at the same time. You really know how to transform yourself dont you, stunning stunning job!
Rarity: I am honestly in utter shock at how metallic you look. It is right out of a sci-fi film! You're whole description wasn't even necessary, just looking at it we can all tell exactly what element you were representing. Amazing job!
Janice: I wish you had have explained your choice a little more, rather than just saying "it's metal and the shoulder plates remind me of Chinese armour", it could have gone much deeper than that. Strength, courage, determination, firmness and rigidity are all attributes associated with metal, and are both featured in the expression and styling of the photograph. Gold and silver are metal colours, but I am not entirely sold on either the setting or the bra.
Morgan: This photo has strong and weak elements for me.
Janice: i c wat u did der..
Morgan: BEEEEE QUIET JANICE! Anyway, your modelling and your face here is strong, your styling is good and your face is making an undeniable connection with the camera. Your eyes have a lot of tension and fierceness. I like the metal shoulder arms however I wish we could see more metal, and instead of them just resting on your shoulders like a prop in a photo the metal element needed to be the center of attention.
Rarity: I can see that a few of our contestants are going for a more futuristic feel and for an elements task I am certainly glad as it brings new breath into this type of shoot. Natalie I love the shoulder pads and your hair but while I do enjoy what I can see of your outfit, it seems a little out of place because of the pads. Overall, a good go at metal!
Janice: First, let's talk about the size - It's tiny, and we can't see anything. In future, try to keep the size about 400x400, but below 800x800?
I see Earth in this, but I think you should have expanded on that description. Earth is balanced. It's about patience, thoughtfulness and stability. That is exactly what we see in the photo, and that's what distinguishes it from being wood. However, we didn't get this in the description.
Morgan: This did need to be bigger so all the details of the photo could be emphasized. Its hard to see any of the details of your face which takes away any positives/negatives that could be said about this element of your modelling. The setting you are in surely does represent earth and its looks very tranquil and peaceful. You seem to look beautiful, but as mentioned the sizing of the photo makes it very hard to comment on details. If larger I think this would be a good representation of earth.
Rarity: Even though the size is small, it's clear as day what element you're selling. Even the bench your sitting on is stone. You have earthy tones in your clothing and the surrounding area is lush with green! Watch out for minor inconveniences such as size though, they can make a big difference. I say overall, well done!
Janice: Your lovely description has made this photograph 100% Earth, though Western, we might say air, but this is Wu Xing. Everything about this screams serenity and harmony, and you've done your research too. Earth is represented by the colour yellow. I really love this one!
Morgan: This is beautiful! I love your description it compliments this photo. You look wonderful and connected to your element, you almost blend in but not to the point where yous presence is weakened. You look so graceful and comfortable AND beautiful! Really good job this week
Rarity: While these are Chinese elements, and yellow is a large representation of Earth and there is a faint yellowish color to the photo, I do see this as more of an air type photo of the cloud like atmosphere that is surrounding you and the dove flying off from you as if you are an angel. Though it's not traditional earth, it certainly sets you apart from anyone else who chose the element.
Janice: What is air?
Janice: I see you've elected to go for something literal rather than artistic, but that's okay! This is a really strong photograph in the terms of stagecraft and props. Modelling wise, perhaps a bit relaxed, but metal is malleable. What I do love about your modelling the most is your face.
Morgan: I really like this, you have given us a realistic, everyday setting/situation and have represented your element well through this. I love the district 9 feel this photo gives (district 9 being a movie). The smoke in the middle of your torso kind of morphs your body where your body is missing parts, however your face is very strong. Lots of tension and emotion, a great male model face.
Rarity: You know what, I like it! You're surrounded by so much muck and grime and yet not afraid to get yourself right in the thick of it with your nice suit on and still look fantastic. I knew right from the get-go that you were representing Metal and a job well done! Just don't give off that down in the dumps expression, even though... you literally are.
Janice: Oh Emma, I think this is a good literal representation of water, but I don't think this is a good angle for you. Yes, it's good for your face. Your face is amazing, actually, but I don't really like how the camera angle is making you look like a midget.
Morgan: This is a good water shot, the water is sparkling and beautiful and you look quite serene and your skin is flawless. As Janice mentioned your modelling is lacking a little bit, you look quite short and your body looks like it has little to no torso in the water. Your face is strong and I love the redness of your lips and hair and the way it contrasts with the water.
Rarity: It was clear by looking at it that you were selling the water element, you're in a bathing suit that is super cute, and your chest deep in water, what else could you possibly be going for? I do not like that yellow sailor hat though. I feel it distracts from the element itself with it's bright color in contrast to the deep blue. I really love the intensity I'm getting from your eyes. Not bad!
Team Africa:
Yasmin representing Water:
"I chose this to represent the Chinese Element of water. I love the use of water in the photo, and the high fashion edge on it, to bring light to China's advanced urban age."

Mulan representing Wood:
"I decided to go down the literal road and went with the element Wood. I think Earth can also fit this photo however I like the artistic forest surrounding Mulan and I think it suits the element well, in a literal sense of course."

Andrej representing Metal:
" I know it is usually frowned upon to use studio shots for things like elements and seasons, but I have a slight obsession with fashion (even stuff as crazy as this!), and this particular shot has such a strong connection to the theme, I couldn't resist using it. I really enjoy doing homework for a photoshoot, and Janice, you come up with some fantastic themes for us to research!
So let's get to it, shall we? I've been trying really hard not to make ridiculously long descriptions for my photos in this game, but since you specifically asked us to explain ourselves this time, I'll lay everything out for ya in a fancy list:

- The styling here clearly looks metallic, and the Chinese element of "Metal" also includes electricity and lightning, and I get that vibe with this as well.
- The season that represents Metal is Autumn, and I think the colors in the outfit portray this time of year perfectly.
- Also, because Autumn correlates with Metal, it is explained as the element of withering, old age, grief, and sadness, and that's why I was really drawn to this particular shot. I think Andrej's pose does a great job of portraying an old and dying being, and even his expression and gray hair helps to illustrate this."

Team Jessica:
Jessica J representing Earth:
"I have chosen Earth. We are all creatures on Earth.
I also looked at your wiki link included and found entries that also support my choice.
Earth: the in-between transitional seasonal periods, I find this photo to look like it could belong with any season, a transition sort of photo, the lighting, the colouring.
In Cosmology and feng shui, Earth is a Yin/Yang balance, in natural phenomena it is Stablizing (representing harmony). The dove represents harmony.
In chinese medicine, Earth represent love in Emotion. The dove has always represented love. I also feel all the heavenly white in this photo represents love and harmony.
Earth is also represented by the colour yellow. My background is a yellow of sorts.
I just feel this whole photo is a great representation of Earth."

The judges are now going to deliberate, and when we return, we shall reveal who will be eliminated.
In the meantime, look at the photos and discuss which ones are your favourites and compliment each other and whatever. This may take more than a few hours, it's 4am where I live, and I'm about to pass out.
